Problems we're called about most often
Dental pain rarely picks a convenient moment. It can flare up late at night, on a Sunday, or when your regular dentist's next opening is weeks away. These are the situations where it's worth picking up the phone rather than waiting.
Severe or throbbing toothache
Pain that keeps you awake, spreads to your ear or jaw, or doesn't settle with over-the-counter pain relief.
Broken, cracked or chipped tooth
Especially if there's a sharp edge, sensitivity to air or temperature, or pain when you bite.
Swelling or a gum "pimple"
Puffiness in the gum or face, a bad taste, or a bump that drains can point to an infection.
Knocked-out or loosened tooth

Lost filling or crown
Not always painful, but the exposed tooth is vulnerable. Keep the crown if you have it.
Pain after a recent extraction
Some soreness is normal. Pain that gets worse after a few days deserves a call.

Dr. Farid Gogani, DDS
Dr. Gogani earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden in 1994. Alongside private practice, he was part of the university's cariology research team, working on caries (tooth decay) prevention, the development of new dental products and modern restorative techniques.
He was licensed to practice dentistry in California in 1999 and has cared for patients in the Greater Sacramento area ever since. He describes dentistry as a field where art and science meet, and he keeps attending courses on new technology and treatment options. His particular interests are restorative dentistry, cosmetic dentistry and implants.

If swelling is affecting your breathing or swallowing, or you have a high fever with facial swelling, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room right away.
